Made in Britain

Founded in 2011, Burnley based BrightLED Ltd has had another year of significant growth, shipping over 40,000 products last year. As a result, the company, which already has 12 employees, is hoping to increase full time employees by a further 25%, with a new recruitment drive for shop floor workers.

BrightLED is a manufacturer and importer of commercial and industrial LED lighting, specifically tailored to the UK market. The company has a strong emphasis on design, technology and state of the art manufacturing, whilst still offering exceptional savings.

Their distributors are hand-picked throughout the UK to ensure that the BrightLED solutions are commercially available anywhere in the UK.

Commented Neil Hardy, MD, BrightLED: “The last 12 months have been memorable in the development and growth of the company. We have recruited four new staff and will be doubling our manufacturing capacity, when we move into new facilities at Network 65 in Burnley.

“We have also recently won our second largest ever contract for a new development in Deansgate, Manchester; shipped over 30% more products, as well as launching a new brand, Photonic, to promote our increased Lancashire manufacturing capabilities and products.

“Previously, the majority of our sales were based on either standard off the shelf products or customised versions. We are now developing our own manufactured products and in-house design solutions, to offer a one stop shop for commercial and industrial LED lighting solutions.

“We also aim to source as much raw material as possible from our local supply chain and to practice what we preach, by protecting the environment, with a commitment to cutting our carbon by 10% as part of the 10:10 campaign.

“Our future is bright and over the next 12 months, we will be targeting 50% forecasted growth. Hopefully this can be achieved by signing our first export contract. Ultimately, our success will be based on letting quality come first, based on the skillsets of our local employees.”

The lighting industry is embroiled in a never ending tit for tat argument over cost vs quality.

While I believe there is a ‘quality’ line that gets crossed in this race to the bottom on price I’ve also seen a large number of sharply priced products that actually provide good quality and good value.

Not all pricey products are guaranteed to be high quality and a big price tag isn’t a mark of quality. Although there is considered to be an epidemic of low quality and low priced products what about the undiscussed epidemic of highly priced average quality products with recognised European branding on that are essentially being bought from china a ‘pushed’ at a premium based on brand value.

Although I believe that brands build loyalty and earn the right to trade off their name there is also a line that gets crossed where quite frankly an abuse of this trust happens and happens often.

Refreshingly there are a growing number of buyers, specifiers and industry leaders who are willing to challenge the status que. The days of products been protected and locked in to specification based on brand alone are hopefully numbered. Value for money is the key for the person ultimately picking up the bill and as an industry we have an obligation to step outside of our existing comfort zones and explore the unexplored.

In the cost of any product is a blend of material costs, labour costs and a percentage of the operational costs of the business. With this in mind a lighting businesses ability to run efficiently, be proactive with its supply chain, not over engineer product and create economies through better production methods can also drive down consumer costs.

There is more than one way to skin a cat as they say and not all price tags should be measured equal. Not all heavy prices should be assumed high quality and not all low price tags should be considered tat. That said, there are plenty of products and brands out there who will happily oblige the stereo type.

Make a decision based on the integrity of the product not the number on the price tag.

Burnley business, Bright LED has enjoyed a strong start to 2017 after securing contracts of over £500,000.

The LED lighting specialist has been appointed by global communication and technology company, Verizon, to manufacture and install low energy LED lighting across its UK offices and warehouses. Further wins come from several commercial and industrial clients across the UK and Europe.

The company has seen significant growth since it was established in 2011, with a further six jobs created at its AMS Technology Park Head Office as a result of the recent wins. The skilled team design, manufacture, import and supply bespoke LED lighting and fittings for use in offices, retail stores, warehouses, commercial units and more recently, street lighting.

Low energy LED lighting is on the increase as organisations look for cost and energy savings. By 2030, it’s estimated that LEDs will account for 75 percent of all lighting sales. BrightLED has an international customer base and a reputation for innovative design but it also continues to play an important part in local life. The company’s products were used as part of Burnley town centre’s £3m refurbishment in 2016, with new luminaries manufactured and installed throughout the town centre. The new lighting is projected to reduce town centre running costs by up to 60%, with a huge reduction in maintenance and improved light levels.

BrightLED now plans to expand its bespoke design service and increase UK production. An investment programme throughout 2017 will see the installation of new equipment which will increase production by 50% and create a number of further jobs.

Managing Director Neil Hardy commented “We have had an exciting and successful few years which looks set to continue throughout this year. We are proud to be manufacturing innovative lighting products, here in Burnley, and supplying them to some of the world’s leading companies.

“As a member of the Made in Britain campaign, which supports and promotes British manufacturing, our vision is to grow our production capacity and provide local employment opportunities. We are proud that over 80% of our workforce is from Burnley and look forward to welcoming more local people into our business this year.”
